Creative Economy

With socially engaged work, an ongoing obstacle is that viewers are trained to see the art in the object. Once the chime was built, everyone said, "Oh, that's Core Sample."

In order to help bring people into the activity which defined the project, we opted to look at it economically. Given that we had enacted the work as Significant Developments, LLC, it only made sense to create an infographic of the economic impact of our project.

On the wall inside the Museum was displayed two large plexi glass panels, one with an image of the chime installation and the other the assembly line. Linking the two was a map of Mississippi. Each picture represents a business or person who received money in the course of the project, each square inch represents $12.25. The expenses for the assembly line show up under that image and likewise for the chime. The gas stations we visited on our roadtrip are displayed on the map.

We partnered with the Mississippi Bureau for the Creative Economy to create this display.
